Clear Aligners Q & A

What are clear aligners?

This is an advanced teeth straightening system that uses clear aligners to gently move your teeth into a more aesthetic position. Clear aligners are made from a special thermoplastic material that places a precise amount of force in the right place to gradually realign your teeth.

The nearly invisible aligners fit snugly on your teeth right below your gumline, making them both comfortable and covert.

How do clear aligners work?

The clear aligners are designed specifically for you and follow a custom-made plan to gently move your teeth into position.

Dr. Linda Huang uses a special computer program to create a digital plan of action for the movement of your teeth. The program allows you to see exactly how your teeth will move into their new position, and what your smile looks like when you’ve completed treatment.

Once your map has been created, Dr. Linda sends it to the lab so they can make your customized set of aligners. Then, you wear each set of aligners for two weeks for at least 22 hours a day, or as recommended by Dr. Linda Huang.

What types of conditions can clear aligners help fix?

Clear aligners can fix a number of different conditions, including:

  • Overbite and underbite
  • Overcrowded or gapped teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Open bite

After an examination of your teeth, Dr. Huang determines if clear aligners is the right treatment for you.

How do I care for my clear aligners?

Clear aligners are removable, so you should take them out when eating. Be sure to brush your teeth after eating to remove any food residue before placing the aligners back in your mouth. Drinking water throughout the day and avoiding sugary foods/drinks is best. You may leave the clear aligners in when drinking water, but if you are drinking other beverages, it is recommended to remove the aligners and swish your mouth with water before placing the aligners back on your teeth.

To clean your aligners, use warm water, a soft toothbrush, and a mild clear liquid soap. Rinse thoroughly after brushing and remember to store the clear aligners in a protective case when not in use to prevent loss or damage to the aligners.

How long do clear aligners take to straighten my teeth?

The amount of time it takes for clear aligners to straighten teeth varies from person to person. But most people get their desired smile in about 18 months. You may, however, start to notice an improvement in the alignment of your teeth as soon as a few weeks after starting treatment.
